We have been waiting for this moment for so long! The first floor of our old house is finally done, and we can go and buy some furniture. :) We started our old house renovation in July 2023. The first floor of our house was horrible when we bought it - several layers of linoleum on the floor, different tiles in the kitchen, pipes and cables crossing the walls, and different floor levels in all rooms.
There was mold, dust, and dirt everywhere. We started everything from scratch - new electric installation, floor insulation, pipes for the kitchen, removing and installing new screed, replacing the windows, and removing and plastering all walls. The final stage was the tile installation, which we did ourselves because the budget and time went off scale.
In our last video on YouTube, you will see Deyana completing the grout of the tiles, and we are done! Finally, a smooth, leveled floor! After almost two years of walking in the dust, starting and stopping work for different reasons, we finished! It took much longer than expected; we went through stages of disappointment, anger, happiness, and complete exhaustion, but the closer it was coming to the end, the easier it got. But we will continue as far as we can!
There were moments we questioned ourselves if we made the right decision to buy this house and spend our savings on this never-ending project! We are not young anymore, and this is a huge project to renovate such a house, where nothing has been done for years. Will we be able to finish it? For the last two years we have found so many things that need repairing and so many other things for which we have been misled by the seller. Life always teaches us lessons, and we always pay for our naivety.
But if we look back at our first video, "We Bought an Abandoned House": which you can also watch and compare to where we are now; the first floor of our old house is unrecognizable.
We achieved a lot, especially keeping in mind that the communication with the local companies and builders was not always easy due to language differences. In the future we will try to do as many things as we can ourselves, because house renovation work here is insanely expensive and the time frame of the work stretches a lot. So the best thing is to rely on ourselves for most of the things and to not accept every offer we are given without checking other options—lessons learned!
