When we bought our house, we saw that in our garden, we have a persimmon tree. The first autumn it gave so many persimmons, and we started thinking, what are we going to do with so many fruits that we don’t like eating?
If we only knew Persimmons Better Before! It turned out that we actually have one of the non-astringent varieties—Fuyu. The tomato-shaped fruits can be eaten even when firm and are very delicious. When they are ripe, they taste something between vanilla and caramel.
We had never liked persimmons before. We’ve tried a few times, but we found that astringent taste quite unpleasant and left us wondering why these fruits are even sold and eaten by people? The first time we tried one of the fruits we picked from our tree, we were shocked how different these fruits were from those we tried before. Obviously the previous owners knew what they had planted. Now we are really thankful for having this beautiful tree in our garden. In autumn its leaves turn dark red, and when the fruits start to ripen, they look like orange Christmas balls; the tree looks magical. In autumn mornings when fog slowly crawls to the hills, we enjoy this beautiful appearance from our terrace while having our morning coffee - one of these priceless moments. :)
Our persimmon generously gives us so many fruits that can also be stored well for a few months. One of the Aquariuses can cook, :) and persimmons can easily be implemented in many recipes. Check out Deyana’s new YouTube channel: Grow, Eat and Repeat where she’ll be sharing some of our favorite things to eat, prepared with homegrown fruits and veggies.
This year we filmed the harvest of our persimmons, not willing to share our precious fruits with the cheeky birds that started eating them when they got their first orange shades.
