It’s the beginning of September, and a lot of things have happened in our garden. It’s our second year growing vegetables on our land, and every month we learn something new. We still try to figure out what’s best to grow here - what thrives and what dies—because not everything you sow or plant will reward your work.
The quality of the soil is not great and needs improving, but we are doing it slowly because it’s quite costly. Whole spring and summer we have been very busy taking care of our plants and trees, and in return they keep saying thank you by giving us delicious veggies and fruits. Constant watering, weeding, pruning, and grass-cutting keep our garden alive, but the work is rewarding. In our video Self-Sufficient | June Harvest on YouTube, we showed you that even in early summer there are so many things that you can harvest, but now in late summer our garden is really flourishing, and there is an abundance of food. It’s really hard to plan how many seeds we have to sow, because we cannot predict how many will germinate and then how many of the seedlings will survive and give produce. Still, we have to try to not oversow too much :) and plan more carefully what we need. Well, maybe this year we got a bit wild with planting. :)
In September our San Marzano tomatoes are at their peak, but we also grew watermelons, melons, beets, and almost every vegetable a household would need. Fruit trees have been amazing after we pruned them. We are really proud we are another step closer to self-sufficiency; we don’t buy any veggies or fruits from the grocery store anymore. The next step will be maybe getting some chickens for eggs. :)
