Apple Festival in Dolenjske Toplice - Slovenian Traditions in Beekeeping, Baking, and Celebrating Nature's Gifts

- Posted in YouTube by

Passing by a billboard around Dolenjske Toplice, we saw the ad that they will have this festival to mark the apple harvest. We love apples, so why not go and see what Slovenians do at such events?

It’s always nice to mix with locals, and here in Slovenia people are generally really kind and talkative.

Dolenjske Toplice is a small, charming town in Southeast Slovenia, part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola. The town is mainly popular for its thermal springs and medical tourism, but this festival is another way to explore the town. It is a good example of the local traditions, the way small communities here mark autumn, and, in this case, the apple harvest.

One of the amazing things about Slovenia is how locals keep their traditions and find occasions to celebrate nature and its gifts. Every small town has their local event calendar full of cultural events and gatherings of people who share similar interests - beekeeping and honey production, gardening, traditional baking, meat and cheese production, and many others.

In the video we published on YouTube about this event, you will see a little bit of everything - an exhibition of different apple varieties, traditional apple baked sweets, an exhibition showing the history of the 110-year-old local beekeeping and honey production society, and a few other stands with local production.

We had a very interesting day trying to practice our basic Slovenian (it is a hard language to learn, with so many dialects spoken around you never know if you pronounce the words correctly). We hope you will also enjoy seeing more about the countryside of Slovenia and its traditions. Thanks for reading, and enjoy watching our video.
