The property we bought in 2022 had a beautiful garden, many fruit trees, and lovely flowering shrubs. We first saw the property in spring, and it looked lush green. It’s a big piece of land, and we did not check the garden then as the grass was quite high.
The house had stayed empty for years, and sadly, the previous owner did not have the possibility to properly care for both the house and land. When we started cutting the grass, we found that they left the ivy to grow out of control, overtaking most of the fruit trees. We spent many hours removing ivy roots and whole patches of ivy, but it kept growing wildly. Some trees in the garden were completely overgrown by ivy, and we had to remove them. We couldn't save them because nothing was left.
A few of the trees were still giving fruits, but during our first year here, we only had a few fruits from more than ten trees. One of the reasons was the uncontrolled ivy growth; the other was lack of proper pruning! Although it was a drastic measure, we had to remove the ivy from some trees. In the YouTube video you see below, we were trying to save an old apple tree that started drying because ivy overtook it. We hope this old apple will blossom in spring after we release it from this invasive evergreen shrub. The trees are old, but there is still some hope for them.
We know we have to plant new fruit trees, and a day before our departure at the end of February, we got two fig tree saplings from a kind neighbor. Tree saplings are quite expensive in the garden centers, so we are really thankful for such gifts. We had just enough time to plant them before our travel. We also planted five different blueberry shrubs. Blueberries are one of our favorites and we look forward to planting more varieties.
We hope our garden grows like your interest in our videos, and more of you who watch our videos will subscribe to our YouTube channel. This will mean a lot to us! Thanks for reading, and see you in the next episode.
