Our dream about having a house in Slovenia started in 2009. At that time we used to live in Spain, and once, travelling across Europe, we took a wrong way and entered Slovenia. We actually did not realise where we were, so we had to check on the map what this beautiful place we were crossing was.
Both of us were stunned by nature - greenery everywhere and those beautiful houses on the top of the hills along the road!
We started coming to Slovenia on holidays every year, and the more we saw, the more we fell in love. It felt like the right place for us, the place where we want to live, except the fact that we did not have enough money to buy anything here. We were living in rented flats, moving from country to country following different jobs. So we started saving and dreaming of buying a house here, our own place to call home!
It took a lot of years because we wanted to buy something debt-free without becoming slaves to some bank. I remember in my childhood, my father was laid off and the mortgage we had to pay the bank. I can only imagine what my parents went through not to lose our home. For our future house, we did not want that!
Thirteen years later, in 2022, we saved some money and started looking for a house. It wasn’t easy; our emails to real estate agencies did not get any answers, and the phone calls we rejected because of the foreign number we were calling from. It was really hard to find some realtor who would talk in English, but we did not give up! We packed our bags and traveled to Slovenia. In two weeks we found our house, we signed a pre-sale contract with the seller who did not speak a word of English, and we returned to our rented flat. Six months later the deal was finalized; we did not know anything about the bureaucracy in Slovenia until then.
In October 2022 we got the keys of our new and completely empty house. We stayed two weeks on our first visit, with no furniture, only rainwater, a sleeping bag we carried with us, and a small stove to make some coffee and boil eggs. We couldn’t believe our dream came true! We had a house, our own in the country, which we fell in love with at first sight! Amazing views from the house terrace would greet us every morning, and a beautiful garden full of fruit and nut trees!
We filmed our house the way it looked when we bought it - abandoned for the last 15 years and desperately needing renovation! We did not care then; we had our place! We decided to film our renovation progress, and later it became an idea for our YouTube channel.
