A Day in the Forest - Foraging Chestnuts and Roasting them on an Open Fire

- Posted in YouTube by

When we bought our house, we didn’t know our future home would be surrounded by a chestnut forest. On our first autumn walk, we saw the chestnut trees and people who were collecting chestnuts. That was such a nice surprise!

Chestnuts are one of the best things in autumn; roasted on an open fire, they are so delicious, and if you live in a chestnut forest, that’s a gift from nature. We were walking just with our hands in the pockets, but we soon filled the pockets with chestnuts, and we came another day for more. Since then we forage chestnuts every autumn, and we roast them on an open fire. A day spent in the forest to forage chestnuts is always fun and creates great family memories - to find the tree with the biggest chestnuts and to have a cup of hot coffee in the woods. Then to go home, lit the fire, and roast some chestnuts while they are still fresh. In our garden we have a great outside fireplace, and we use it a lot for all the things we grow in our garden. Chestnuts roasted on an open fire taste amazing, nothing in common with the ones you’d prepare in an oven. The smoky taste combined with the sweetness of the chestnuts—just yum! This year we decided to film one of our days in the forest, we’ll take you with us in the Slovenian Alps, and we'll forage chestnuts. When we return home, we will show you how we roast them on an open fire. Watch our YouTube video Foraging and Roasting Chestnuts on an Open Fire to see how we prepare the chestnuts for roasting and a few tips on how to roast and peel them easily.
